Our summer 2010 visitor: Fiona Alofa Kanau

By Joanne Kanau & Kanau Sion

Fiona, Joanne and Leila in Perth City

We, and especially Joanne and the kids are pretty lucky, yet again to have another visitor in the form of Fiona Alofa Kanau to spend part of this spring and summer with us. This visit has been long anticipated as Fiona (Joanne's immediate young sister) had, over the years, had a lot to do with the upbringing and upkeep of the kids when we were back in Port Moresby. She was the most closet and one who spent heaps of her time (since Joanne and I got married) with the family. Sadly, we had to bid her goodbye in 2008 as we moved to Australia. However, we made a promise to fly her  for a visit to Perth whenever we were ready. It was a promise which bore no specific date and time. 2008 ended almost unnoticed and 2009 came and went by so fast. For her, it must have been an anxious wait riddled with frustration for fear that a dream of a life time could turn out to be just another "promises are lies". We'd hate to be in her situation, but for her this anxiety must have been further perpetuated by the fact that another year in 2010 was also drawing  to a close sooner than realized and yet no news or confirmation for this anticipated trip of a life time was forthcoming.

Well, for us, promises made are promises kept and finally Fiona arrived last month (on the 27th of October 2010). It had also been the longest trip of her life..an hour 20 minutes out of Port Moresby to Cairns and then her evening leg of the out bound flight to Perth took an excruciating five hours plus. Finally, Fiona is here, much to the excitement and joy of the kids..and probably most of all, herself. We have taken Fiona to a few site seeing and most importantly to the infamous Freemantle City - a sub city of Perth with a lot of history and tradition and one which she had read a lot about. We have taken a lot of pictures and more site seeing and photos are on the cards as they will be testament of her trip of a life time when she returns to PNG on the 19th of December, 2010. In the meantime, from the Sions family point of view ''Fiona, we welcome you and we hope that your stay with us, however short it may be, will be a memorable one".
