Our Christmas (2010) and new year (2011) 'get to gether' with the Nakos and Selans

Christmas and new year are two important times people look forward to every year...the former being the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and the latter marks the end of the year that has been and welcome the new year with hope and optimism. In practice also they are times when families and friends converge in a spirit of
unity. For us,  Manus Province in PNG where we originally hail from is far away and any thoughts of reunion with family members and loved ones at this time are far fetched and can only be imaginary. To compensate for this we combined with two other Manus families - The Jeffry Aewai Selans of Baluan and the Micah Nakos of Lou islands respectively, to celebrate Christmas and welcome the new year (2011) together.

For a start we rang both Aewai Selan and Micah Nako and put to them the idea of getting together on Christmas day for a family fun bbq They were all for the idea. The day before Christmas (24/12/10) Joanne and I skimmed around for a perfect shady park.
We finally settled for Bibra Lake Park, a few minutes walking distance from Perth's Adventure World,  and which provided ample tree cover generating shades and cooler breeze from the otherwise Perth's scorching summer heat. Besides, it is close to the Nakos' place of residence. We brought varieties of food stuff to bbq and  drinks and had a great time.
We reminisced about home, cracked some local Manus jokes while the kids enjoyed the kiddies play area. The mothers had a few alcohol beverages and had fun too while enjoying each other's company.

Before we retired for the day we suggested and agreed to meet again to say good bye to 2010 and welcome 2011 with heaps of optimism in the like manner.
On the last day of the year (31/12/10) we again converged, this time at the Nakos residence in Coollbelup. We had heaps to bbq and eat. It was party time ....the girls played music and danced  as a few mothers joined in exposing some of their dance moves only after some glasses of whine had been made use of.

As it drew closer to midnight most of us drove to the city in the hope of getting a glimpse of the fireworks to celebrate the end of 2010 and welcome 2011. I must say communication between the three chief planners and architects ( Micah, Aewai and Sion) of the celebration was not up to scratch and consequently we lost each other along the way heading to watch the city's new year fireworks. Although we managed to meet again in the city after some mobile phone communication attempts, this was only briefly as we lost each other again almost at the stroke of midnight.

Thus only the Sions and Selans enjoyed the brief colorful display of fireworks to welcome the new year 2011 while the Nakos, after a brief pull over by the cops, decided to head straight home as we learnt later.

Apart from this minor glitch at the end, I must say it was an enjoyable homely feeling without a doubt. We look forward to a better 2011 and hope of better things to come. From our end we the Sions would like to pay tribute to Micah Nako and Jeffrey Aewai Selan and their families for being part of us and hope this association continues. Happy new year 2011.
